International Women's Day

Updated: Dec 2, 2018

by Gina Shapiro, Santa Barbara, CA

On March 8th, all around the world, people come together to support women's rights and accomplishments socially, culturally, and politically. International Women's Day quotes Gloria Steinem: "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights." Countries around the world show their support in many different ways. Fortune states that workers in Spain participated in a strike, students in Italy protested against doctors refusing to perform abortions, and citizens of South Korea marched in the mane of #Metoo.

Today, Direct Relief held an event at their headquarters in Goleta. HHD joined in packaging 1000 Dignity Kits to send to women in Africa receiving obstetric fistula surgery. The kits are meant to give them confidence and support as they recover.

Anyone can show their support for women's rights in day to day life. Show yours vocally or online, spread the word of equality, and educate others to make an impact on the future. Here are some great organizations to get involved with which work to help and empower women internationally:
